Battle of the Bag - Post 1

One of the local effects that stood out the most was how the use of the plastic bags has become second-nature to us all. I'll admit that I never have given it much thought. I probably use and throw away 10-20 bags weekly. Also, I did not know that plastic bags were made of oil.

One way that was mentioned to manage or solve this problem, is by speaking to the public openly and testing their knowledge about waste, and what it means to them. Like myself, I feel that people are not aware of issues unless they are brought to their attention. It seems like we don’t worry about things that don’t first and foremost concern us. We live in a "consumer culture" and a lot of times don't realize the long-term effects of what we are doing. The video pointed out a family that was collecting and counting up all of the bags they use regularly. This was alarming to me – because this was an example of what only one family consumes.

As a society we need to stop producing so much. This is an issue that has gotten out of control. We need to learn how to use less, and re-use more. The way people live is all about convenience. Globally, we need to think more about our environment.
